Answers to common questions about SnipTool.
SnipTool lives in your menu bar (look for the scissors icon ✂️). You can start a capture three ways:
• Rectangle Snip: Press ⌘ ⇧ 1 then drag to select a region.
• Window Snip: Press ⌘ ⇧ 2 then click any window.
• Menu bar: Click the ✂️ icon and choose a capture mode.
Global hotkeys require Accessibility permission. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and make sure SnipTool is toggled on.
If you just granted permission, quit and relaunch SnipTool.
Yes. macOS requires Screen Recording permission for any app that captures your screen. SnipTool uses this permission only when you actively trigger a screenshot — it never monitors your screen in the background.
SnipTool collects zero data. All processing is on-device. You can verify this in the app's Privacy Policy.
Use ⌘ S (Quick Save) to save to the last folder you used. The first time, a folder picker appears — choose your preferred location and SnipTool will remember it.
Use ⌘ ⇧ S (Save As) to choose the folder and file format each time.
SnipTool exports as PNG (default), JPEG, TIFF, and PDF. Select your format in the Save As dialog.
Every screenshot is automatically copied to your clipboard the moment you capture it — before the annotation editor even opens. You can paste it immediately into any app.
• Pen — freehand drawing with configurable colour and stroke width
• Highlighter — semi-transparent marker for callouts
• Shapes — rectangle, ellipse, arrow, and line
• Text — add labels with configurable size and colour
• Eraser — remove any stroke or label
Use ⌘ Z to undo and ⌘ ⇧ Z to redo.
Press Escape or click Done. The editor closes without saving. Your screenshot is still on the clipboard.
